Tuxes and Tulle

  /  Advice   /  Wedding Flowers // DIY

Weddings can be stressful, but they can also be lots of fun. If you have a chance to make your own wedding flowers or other decorations from your wedding, why not take the shot?

Flowers are an easy way to make an event look spectacular, but they don’t always come with a low price tag.

In July of 2016, we did flowers for a wedding at Highland Community Church in Wausau, WI. The couple didn’t mind what kinds of flowers we used, but they had a specific vision in mind. They wanted to have teal, purple and blue flowers to match their scheme. One of the only flowers that offers all of this is an orchid.

We used blue and purple orchids, with ruckus leaves and white roses to pull off these bouquets! The Bride & Groom loved their flowers and we loved being a part of their special day!

Here’s what you need for your own DIY bouquets:

  • 2 different kinds of flowers that match, but contrast with each other
  • at least 1 kind of leaves on a stem (we used Ruckus)
  • Floral tape
  • Vases
  • Thick ribbon of your choice

Steps to make a bouquet:

  1. Take the flowers and cut off the bottom of all of the stems to a length you want the bouquet.
  2. start to arrange the flowers and leaves into a bouquet shape.
  3. When you like the look, wrap the bouquet with floral tape. This will stick to itself, so you won’t need any pins.
  4. Wrap the bouquet with the ribbon. I normally use a pin or hot glue to attach the end.
  5. Trim any ends.
  6. You’re done!

Making your own flowers can be hard, but it’s sometimes a better and cheaper idea than going through local florists.

Tip: get your flowers from a local grocery store or from an online distributor. I used globalrose for all of my flower needs.

Happy Planning!
